The one left behind.

It's been a great first six months of the year.
It's been a usual first six months of the year.
It's all changed now as I become the one left behind to continue living in London and the others have moved on to more exciting adventures.

Living in the expat community, even though we are locals, means that there are people moving in and out of our lives each year. It affects my life on so many levels.

Lisbon, 2014

London, 2015
Stockholm, 2015

Berlin, 2016

Aberdeen, 2017

Madrid, 2017

Ojo Caliente, 2017

Taos, 2017
We have been here for 4 years, so far. It has been fantastic. I am so lucky with the people I have met and all the friends that I have found/made. I am truly blessed to have so many close friends to share the good times and the bad times with. I am a social person and I get my energy from being around other people that "get me."

Even though we live abroad, we live the day to day life like a local. This is our neighborhood. This is having the coffee shop know you and know how you like your coffee, it's the butcher, the shopkeepers, the way the pavement is uneven on your walk to school that makes the small things in life become your base and comfort zone.

I have the routine of walking to school with friends and getting the morning chit chat to start the day off right. It's getting to school and seeing the other moms and then we might go for a coffee to just add to the chit chat. Then the routine happens in reverse at the end of the day to pick up the kids. It is all comforting.  I have had these routines for 4 years.

Yes, each year some people move and leave London and I most likely won't see them again in real life unless they come for a visit to London but I will do my best to keep in contact through Facebook.

But the ones I need in my (daily) life have now all moved away. It's the core group who first welcomed me to London and just thinking of all that we have done in the past 4 years in that day to day life is what hurts the most. (OK, a quick pause to get the tissues and pat my eyes)

(I'm back.)

They have left London but each of them has left their mark and I will be reminded of them daily as I go about local life. Walking past Charm's house, walking past Avery's house and now walking past Kristina's street, Cris's house and Michelle's house will bring a smile with a tinge of sadness to my face. It will be hard in the beginning but I know it will get easier.  Although the geographic distance between us is great, the connection to them is still very local and I appreciate their friendship every day especially when I am reminded of them going about the daily life here in London.

When I walk down the High Road past Gail's Bakery, I look at the outside table on the corner and always think of Avery and it's been 3 years since she moved.  Almost every time, I glance in the window at Kitchen and Pantry to see if Zulma is sitting in there working on her computer and always feel a sense of loss that she is not there but I also think of the good times we have had and the next time we are going to meet. I will have to continue to eat gelato at Oddono's at least once a week, it will be hard but someone has to do it.

Charm's old house
Zulma's street
Any chance, Zulma is in there?
Always a smile when I think of the times Avery was sitting there.

Everyone's favorite gelato place

Kristina's street (and Angie's little food shop across the road)

Coffee shop on the way to school.

Michelle's house
The upside to all of this is that I have a few new places and countries to visit in the coming months. (I hope they have the spare bedroom ready for me.) That is very exciting.

The down side has been all the "lasts" that we have had the past few weeks. Last walk to school. Last time at the coffee shops. Last "goodbye" or "see you soon." Last time to enjoy the city. Last night at the pub.  The combination of happiness and sorrow at each of these "lasts" is so bittersweet.

Last lunch Cris, Michelle and me.

Last brunch at the Holst House.

So many good times with Kristina and Magnus!

Chiswick, June 2018 (last picture of all of us living in London)

The emotion is so raw. It's the end of an era. I am the one left behind.

Luckily for me and for them, our friendships will just continue in a new and improved way.
Of that, I am sure.

May 1 - everyone is on holiday.

2014.05.01

Even though I could sleep as late as I wanted- my internal alarm clock got me up before 6 a.m.
I chatted with friends, took the dog out for a walk in the morning SNOW STORM and gave myself the shot in the tummy.

SNOW on the car....

Then I went back to bed for a while.

Don't have (mental) strength to write about how much I really do not like Swedish regular healthcare. It really sucked today and I do not want to remember it. It has sucked almost every time I have had to meet them. Shit, it is so energy draining. I will not miss that part of Sweden at all.

By lunch time the snow was gone and I ate some lunch and then dozed on the chair until that afternoon appointment with an on-call doctor.

As I have a high risk for infection, any infection that is treated with antibiotics would probably mean that chemo would be delayed. Luckily the doctor did not prescribe them but I am worried for anything that would delay chemo.

This is going to be a tough 4 weeks, I can tell! Good thing my sister is coming on Saturday so I will have more support.

Home again and decided the solution for dinner was to do drive through at Mcdonalds. No one feels like cooking. We piled in the car and got that sorted in time to drive my oldest to his football practice.

May Bonfire.

2014.04.30

Tired this morning upon waking up. But managed to drag this old body out of the bed and out with the dog. Back inside after a short walk I got the kids up and took my pills and my shot.

Only my two oldest had school today so getting them off to school was not a problem.

I ate some breakfast and then the phone rang. It was Ulrica, the 2nd grade teacher from Campus Manilla where I work. I was on speakerphone and the whole class sang Happy Birthday to me and told me what time the grilling started today so I could come and visit them. Wow, tears came to my eyes during their thoughtful rendition of the song.

I was tired so I took a 1,5 hour nap before it was time to drive into town to meet my students at school. Today they were having a grill day for lunch with some outside games and this makes it easier for me to hang out with them.

My youngest son followed along for the day. We arrived at the campus and walked into the 2nd grade classroom. All the kids were happy to see me. It was awesome to see all of their smiling faces again. I spent the next three hours talking to and playing with the kids from kindergarten to third grade. One of the cutest moments was when I joined the first grade class and they asked why do you have that hat on? I said "I don't have any hair under it. Do you want to see it?" They shouted "yes". I took off the hat and they all wanted to touch my head. So I bent my head over and had 24 different hands rub it....is that good luck for them or me? Adorable. After three fun filled hours it was time to head home. Hugs galore from all the kids. LOVED. MISS THEM TERRIBLY.

The traffic was terrible to get home as it is the first day of a 4 day weekend. I was tired when I got home. I set my alarm and slept 1,5 hours so I could have enough strength for dinner at Stina's house and the neighborhood bonfire and fireworks later on in the evening. Awesome to sleep.

It was 6 p.m. and we walked over to Stina's house. I have boys, she has boys and there were a few friends there too. So the house was filled with boys - good thing they were on the trampoline before dinner and worked out some of their energy. Great dinner and company as usual. Thanks Stina and Alex.

We walked to the bonfire area. The children were lining up a bit away so they could each carry a lit torch to throw on the fire after the procession. It is always kind of cool to watch the procession and then how the kids form a ring around the huge pile of twigs and branches and throw the torches on it. As it quickly flames up, we are all backing away from the heat. As the fire dies out -- the fireworks start. They are always enjoyable to watch. The whole bonfire evening is a fun way to welcome in Spring and to see the neighbors. I might just miss that aspect of Sweden when we move.

Of course, it was really cold tonight and started to rain just before we got home. That is typical Swedish weather - they are even predicting snow for tomorrow-----hahhahaha. It wouldn't surprise me.

Tomorrow will be a day of rest. I promise to myself to try that for a whole day. It just might work.

TGIF

2014.04.25

Only up once in the middle of the night. Was tired when I woke up just before the alarm went off. But, today was a hurry up and relax day.  Checked FB and messages from friends that arrived in the middle of the night. Not always having strength to answer right away to all the messages. Up and out with the dog. She is so good and patient. Then take some pills and get the kids up. There was frost on the ground and ice on the windshield.

Ended up driving the kids to the station and to school. I am a nice mom. They were lucky today. Then it was home to shower and get ready for my walk with Petra.

Petra knocked on the door and we were off on a good paced walk talking about everything and laughing most of the way. Great with fresh air. Back from the walk and we had some tea and coffee and she got to taste some cookies..........THANKS Petra.

I ate and snacked the whole day. Got some emails sent, some appointments made for next week, watched some of my favorite British shows and planned for some logistics for the move. I chatted with most of my family in the USA during the day and even got to watch my niece, Katelyn eating a dunkin donut with sprinkles on it because it is her birthday. Torture to watch....

My youngest called and I picked him up from school and then we did a quick trip to the supermarket. It was the first time I didn't have a hat on. Felt good to be bald and not care. I do notice that everyone looks. Also confusing to them that we switch between Swedish and English as we converse with each other.

Home again and he helped to put the groceries away before the others came home from school. All is calm and dinner was eaten with gusto.

Peter is on his way home and that will be good because we have a lot of work to do tomorrow like emptying the storage units and going through more boxes. I will try and pace myself, it will be hard.

Melancholy Monday

2014.04.21

Awoke at 5:30 am, got up and visited the little girl's room and then fell asleep until 8:45 am. Not bad. Some of my friends were worried when they hadn't heard from me in the morning. Took my pills, ate some breakfast and then tried to watch some TV.

The kids got up in time for lunch. I had made myself two eggs and some bacon for a mid morning snack. The day felt long already by 1 pm. I didn't feel tired but I just didn't have any energy to do anything today.

Peter changed the tires on both cars, we chatted with the neighbors and I sat on the front lawn enjoying the sun and throwing the Frisbee for Sophie to catch. She enjoyed being out in the sun too. We had brought out the outdoor furniture and I saw that they needed to be oiled. It was on my list of things to do.

I am nervous for the results of the cat scan test tomorrow when I go to the doctors. It is what it is but in the times of letting my mind wander it sure does wonder how it will turn out.......

So, I decided that I felt like eating out tonight but as this is Sweden and it is the day after Easter, the stores were closing at 6 pm and the restaurants at 7 pm in Täby Centrum. So at 5 pm it was a quick dash to Vapianos for some Italian food. It is now painful to eat most foods. My mouth is sore and hard to open so I eat slowly and try to ignore the discomfort. But my hungry stomach usually convinces my head and mouth to go along with this torture....

It was pasta, cappuccino and even a little Tiramasu. When we got home I had some energy and the setting sun was warm and inviting so I decided to oil the chairs and the table. I spent almost an hour to oil in the 10 chairs and the long table. I needed to do it and I am only going to get weaker, so today was the day. It felt good to get something done today.

Friends and family checked in on me today and that always feel good. It lets me know that they care and that I am loved. And the reminders usually come just when I need them.......

Big day tomorrow for blood work and cat scan test results at the doctor. Up early tomorrow to be there in time. Gotta write down my list of questions for the doctor.

Easter Sunday

2014.04.20

YES, you guessed it. I awoke before the alarm clock but at least I had slept through the night. I took Sophie out to the woods for her morning rituals and then we came back in and I made myself a big bowl of cereal. Everyone else was asleep. The silence was deafening but peaceful.

Jenny and I had stayed up late last night and stuffed 85 small plastic Easter eggs with jelly beans and chocolate so the kids could do the annual Easter Egg Hunt this morning.

85 small eggs...filled with jelly beans or chocolate.....

The kids finally woke up and they knew the rules. Eat breakfast, get dressed and everyone has to be ready at the same time. There are no good pictures from them finding the eggs because it happened so fast. I have never seen them move so fast.

This year's weather was so different from last year when there was at least a foot of snow covering the ground and our friends were visiting from the USA.

The children found their eggs and gathered around the kitchen table to see what they got. A little bit of trading went on between them but for the most part they were quite happy.

Then we started to pack up the house so we could get home to start emptying the storage units and getting rid of some stuff before we move. I spent about two hours going through boxes and throwing out papers from 1992-1996. Why had I even saved them in the first place?  I did find Peter's dance card to the dance school we went to before we got married.........I am saving that memento.

Dinner was grilled marinated chicken breasts that tasted great fresh off the grill. I am tired today but not exhausted at least. Those white blood cells are increasing.......

So many thoughts going on in my head. It is hard for anyone else to understand the range of thoughts that fly past my brain. Positive thoughts that the tumor is getting smaller, everything will be ok to what if it's not working, my life is forever changed by this, I am a changed person, true friends show themselves in times of crisis, what is important in life, will I really live to a ripe old age, must do all the things that are important to me and are meaningful too.  Sometimes it is like a speeding freight train barreling down the tracks heading for........who knows what?

I have the support of family of friends and that really is keeping me going. GRATEFUL.

Happy Easter Saturday!

2014.04.19

A long night that resulted in many hours sleep just not all in a row. There was  a middle of the night hot chocolate and sandwich break at 2 am. I was lucky then to have a chat on FB with Kim. Thanks KIM.

I fell back asleep and woke again at 6 am. At our summerhouse it is pretty good when the dog has to go out. We have a lot of forest around our house and I just go out with her and she does her business. Awesome. I took her out and then went back to bed. All of us sleep a lot better out here with all the fresh air.

The morning fog lifted and gave a brilliant sunny day today!

Finally mid-morning and we eat our first breakfast, get ready for the day and then it is time for our second breakfast (brunch). I am feeling tired even though I have been in bed so many hours. But better to rest so I can be in on the festivities in the afternoon.

Early afternoon and it is time to head to Farfar and Evy’s house for Easter Eve Lunch. All of the cousins were gathered. All of the usual Easter foods (Swedish style) were served. And everything tasted great as usual. The kids love going there for the annual egg hunt.  They have to eat lunch first and then they start together and look for the hidden egg on the property with their name on it. They can’t open their egg until everyone has found theirs. They are so happy when they can open it and start eating the candy. Thanks Reinhold and Evy for a great day!

The cousins with their Easter Eggs filled with candy.

I got a chance to rest when the rest of the gang went down to admire the new dock. It felt good to rest after sitting out on the back deck in the sun for a couple of hours. I tried to tan my bald head. Not sure it made a difference.

We came home around dinnertime with Jenny, Patrik and Ulrica who are sleeping over tonight. We whipped up some dinner while the kids and Peter started a quick little fire to get rid of some small trees. Not so many matches and fresh trees means not everything burned. The 5 ravenous children ate up dinner quickly. It is so fun that the cousins can spend time together.

Tea and the rest of the girl scout cookies were enjoyed by us adults. Now we are just going to relax and watch the Beatles special on TV.

I am tired but not overtired. Otherwise I feel good and I appreciate every day that it is that way. Can’t wait to be done kicking cancer’s ass but know that I need to take it one day at a time.

50 days since diagnosis....

2014.04.11

A fun and energy giving day was planned for today. Awoke before the alarm clock again after sleeping less than 6 hours. Those dang steroids that keep me awake even though I am tired. Got up, chatted with Nikki, took my pills, took my shower and ready before 7:30 a.m. Kids off to school thanks to Peter.

It has been 50 days since the doctor told me the news that it was non-hodgkins lymphoma growing in my lymph nodes in my neck. At times it feels like it has been 500 years. It is hard to fight for 50 days straight. I have calculated it will take maybe another 80 days to finally find out that I am cancer free. I CAN DO IT.

At 8 a.m. Maria came over for a morning walk and a cup of tea. It was chilly out but the pace kept us warm. Fresh air can't be beat especially when walking with a friend. Then a hot cup of tea is just what is needed. It was a boost of energy. THANKS MARIA.

By 9:30, Peter and I are on our way into town. He has a client meeting and then we are going to meet Clara for lunch at noon. I did not want to sit around the office for two hours so decided to walk around Stockholm and see some sights. It was drizzling and a little cold.

I did some window shopping, went into a couple of stores but then opted for a cup of coffee in Cafe Ritorno. A neat place that was full of famous Swedish people today. Fredrik from Filip and Fredrik was sitting with two others. They were talking about a program that they were going to produce. (They were talking quite loud so it was hard to miss.) Not so exciting but still cool.

Then they left and it was quite for about 10 minutes. Then a tall man comes in and sits down at the table right next to me. I look up at him and he is an Swedish actor that I recognized and admired in a few movies. So he starts talking on his phone and I start wondering how I can start up a conversation with him or at least take a selfie with him. After 15 minutes he hangs up the phone and I have read all the available newspapers. I say "excuse me but aren't you the guy from the movie Patrik 1,5? (Torkel Peterson) Yes, he says. I said (I think I said) I really liked you in that movie and would you mind if I took a selfie with you? I am from America.  (I said all of this in Swedish, of course)  He smiled his great smile and said yes, not a problem. I sat down next to him and voila.  That made my day. THANKS TORKEL.
Torkel and me. (he had his arm around me....)
By this time it was time to head to Peter's office to meet him and Clara for lunch. I showed Peter the picture of me and Torkel and he reminded me of another great scene from a movie called "Balls" in English but "Farsan"in Swedish where Torkel prepares a macho salad. Classic.  I got to see a few other people at the office while I was there too. Thanks Katja for the great bracelet!  Lunch was great food, great company and a new dose of energy. THANKS CLARA.

Me and Clara.

On our way home from lunch we picked up Sophie and then I had a few hours of organizing more stuff for the London move.
I stopped by Mia's house to drop some stuff off and wish them well on their trip. Always a dose of energy to be around Mia. THANKS MIA.

Finally it was way past dinner time and we decided to order pizzas. After dinner, my oldest son and I discussed a bit of his plans to study after high school and which subjects he needs to choose for the IB program which starts in August in London. He is really maturing and focused on his studies. I am so proud of him. PROUD MOM.

The bandages that are in place over the two stitched areas need to be there for 4 more days and are already itching. Things could be worse. Itching, I can handle.

Grateful for all of you that send me encouraging texts and messages. It really does give me energy and help me to keep kicking butt! GRATEFUL.

Now I am tired and hope to sleep tonight. Might be wishful thinking.

LAB RESULTS ++++++++

2014.04.07

Got up to get the dog out for a walk, the kids up for school and me ready for the day. All went pretty well.

I dropped off the youngest at school and headed to the lab to leave some of my blood. I ended up waiting 20 minutes among "sick" people that were coughing - a little stressful. When I finally got in, the nurse said that next time I could tell them and they would take me sooner so I wouldn't have to wait amongst all the germs because of my exposed immune system

Home again and needed to spend the next few hours figuring out which bank in the UK is going to give us the best mortgage rates. Technology made it sort of easy by sending emails to the different contacts and them calling me. Some very nice and promising conversations today. Those darn magpies are now building a nest in a different part of the tree. Those persistent buggers.

My doctor's appointment was at 2 p.m.  The rainy weather means everyone drives slower. Then the usual parking garage was full so I had to drive around to the other parking garage and squeeze into the spot. I made it on time to the appointment.

It was Doctor Maria that came and called me in for the appointment. She said "I remember you" OF COURSE she did. She is the doctor that started to give me the bone marrow biopsy needle and couldn't succeed and had to call in OLGA. I told her thanks for giving me two for the price of one. She said she had never experienced that before she met me. I have the hardest bones she has ever seen.

The visit went well. She was a little concerned that I was having shortness of breath sometimes and checked me to make sure that she couldn't see any signs of clotting or swelling in my extremities. Everything looked good. My blood values were also very good. YEAH. That made me happy as the trip to London was ok. I took all the right precautions with the face mask and taxis when needed but I won't risk going again until the chemo is done in May.

Home again and tried to take a little nap but of course the phone rings. It was the realtor from the house that we have put an offer in on. YES. the offer was accepted. Today is my lucky day. I might have to go out and buy a lottery ticket. Peter was very happy.
Peter's motto.

The kids and I ate a simple dinner and then I took a walk with the dog to get some fresh air. I checked in on FB and mail and get energy from all my friends that are thinking about me and showing it. GRATEFUL.

I have a lot to look forward to but I am continuing my main focus on KICKING CANCER'S ASS. That is my #1 priority.  HAPPY.

Travel and avoid germs......

2014.04.02

Woke up at 4:30 a.m. Tossed and turned until 5:45 then it was time to get the ball rolling and get the kids up and ready for school. I took my shot in my stomach all by myself under the supervision of my  nurse. Kids off to school without a hitch.

The morning was spent cleaning up the house and packing. There was room in the carry-on because I was leaving all my brushes and shampoo at home. Then it was last minute food shopping and walking the dog.

Finally it was time and the taxi was outside. A nice calm taxi ride to the airport. Arrived in good time. As I got out I put on my face mask. Going into this germ area necessitates wearing the face mask. It was a strange feeling the looks that I was getting. I was pretty self-conscious and it was pretty warm to wear it. I boarded the plane last as I was sitting in the front row. The flight was uneventful but warm to have the mask on. We landed 10 minutes early and I was first off the plane and through customs in no time.

I had reconsidered and booked a taxi for the ride into London. The guy finally came and looked a little scared when I came up to him and talked through my mask. I followed after him and finally took that mask off once we got to the parking lot. Air.........

It was really an experience to drive into London by car. The guy asked where I was from: New York I said.  Then silence. After a few minutes his phone rang and he started talking in another language. I asked him what it was and he said Persian. Where are you from I asked: Afghanistan he said, from Kandahar. Cool!!! Ok a little worried that maybe he doesn't like Americans so time to change the subject. The first half of the journey was pretty good driving. Then he showed off his skills the last
half in traffic when only the fittest survive. At times I imagined this is how it would be driving in Kandahar...weaving, getting the edge, pedal to the metal and then sudden and quick use of the
brakes as the double decker surges past us. I made it safely and we drove right past Buckingham Palace so done with the sightseeing now....

Peter and I ate dinner near St. Paul's in a restaurant called Paternoster Chop House. Chateaubriand was delicious.
Now it is time for sleep. I am writing this on the iPad and the choosing of pictures is not working.

Lint roller on head works......

2014.03.29

Woke up early but stayed in bed anyway. The day is too long if I get up when I wake up.

Then after two more hours it was time to get up and take those pills and then hop in the shower. Now because there is stubble left on my head that is only 3 mm when I wash my head my hands are covered with small pieces of hair. Not as shocking as when it was long but still an interesting experience. I decided to try and use the lint roller to get the hair off my head. It worked. Peter had fun rolling it on my head.
Lint roller works to get hair off of head.

Our first order of the day was to get the ladder and the long pole and take down the mapgpie nest again. Those two birds do not give up at all. They have now rebuilt the nest 3 times. Peter used the pole as my Dad held the ladder and I stood out in the street supervising. Of course the neighbors came out to enjoy the fun too. No one likes those two birds and we are hoping they get the hint soon they need to find a new tree.

Then Peter and I went to get his watch fixed but of course the store was closed today. Luckily, we were near his brother's house and could stop in for a quick cup of tea. We even got to take some bakery "semlor" home with us. They are a Swedish specialty of a bread bun with almond paste and whipped cream in the middle. They were so good. Thanks Anders.

Stop at the supermarket on the way home so we had everything we needed for tonight's dinner guests. My Mom and Dad prepared the dinner and we helped them. It is fun to have such good food every night. Thanks Mom and Dad.

Martin and Petra arrived and we could sit down and eat soon after the boys had finished grilling the chicken outside on the grill. We laughed, we ate, and ate and ate and then laughed some more. I even had some wine with dinner tonight. Dessert was 3 different sorts of girl scout cookies and some of the semlor. Mmmmmmm goooooooood..............

We even facetimed with my sister and brother in the US. My nephew Jackson, got an "A" on his Bravery paper from school. Well, done Jackson. Both of my brothers have shaved their heads for me. Amazing.

The clocks are being put forward one hour tonight here in Sweden for daylight savings time. I hope I can sleep a bit tomorrow.

Enjoying life each day and living in the here and now. I am seeing progress as I continue my journey to kick cancer's ass.
